What Is LASIK?
L.A.S.I.K. is an acronym for "Laser-Assisted inSItu Keratomileusis." In plain English, this means "cutting open the cornea while the eye is in place, using laser tools." Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK?

- myopia, or nearsightedness
- hyperopia, or farsightedness
- astigmatism, or misaligned lens
A LASIK procedure will NOT be of any help in addressing the following eye conditions:
- macular degeneration (atrophy of the retina)
- cataracts (clouding over of the lens)
These are more serious problems, and your Fresno Lasik MD may or may not have the training and expertise with which to treat them. If not, s/he can always refer you to a qualified ophthalmologist and eye surgeon, should s/he discover in the course of your preliminary eye exam that you are indeed suffering from one of these conditions.
In addition, you must be eighteen years of age or older and be suffering from no other eye disease, injury or genetic defects. Ideally, the prescription of your glasses has not changed in a year or more.
