Vision After LASIK: What to Expect

LASIK vision correction procedure corrects any corneal shaping that produces a patient's impaired vision. By removing corneal tissue and reshaping the cornea the patient receives improved vision. After LASIK patients will find that their vision improves immediately and will often be better than their original vision has ever been.

The patient is kept wide awake, but given a topical anesthetic eye drop that stops them from feeling any of the pain from the laser. If a patient has a history of anxiety, an anti- anxiety pill will be given during the procedure as well.

The first step of vision correction is to create a corneal flap. During this stage, the patient lies down on the table, immobilized, and the eyes are kept open. At this time, the patient may feel some discomfort, and some distortions in his vision. Surgical quality Mechanical blades will be used to cut the cornea. This creates a flap, which is then lifted and folded back and may cause a slight amount of discomfort. At this point during the procedure, the patient will be asked to look into a bright blinking light, In order to keep the eye focus. This blinking light, However, is not the actual laser used for the procedure, the patient will not notice the laser that will be used to shape the cornea.

The second part of the procedure is to reshape the cornea; this is the main portion of the eye reconstructive surgery. By using a laser the proper amount of corneal tissue is now removed. The amount is usually in the tens of micrometers. The laser will hit the corneal tissue with the correct number of pulses and vaporize the excess tissue. This part of the LASIK vision correction process can take up to fifty- five seconds an eye.

With the corneal tissue removed and cornea reshaped the flap is closed. The flap has then been checked for any air bubbles or dirt and debris and to make sure that it is a proper fit. Surprisingly, the flap will naturally heal by itself after LASIK. The LASIK vision correction procedure is now over, and has taken less than 30 minutes to complete. The patient is given a light shield to prevent them from touching or rubbing their eyes. Within the next two weeks patients will be able to take off their protective eye covering and be able to see the world how they never have before.
